2012-13 Men's Fencing Schedule

2012-13 Women's Fencing Schedule

PHILADELPHIA -
Returning a combined four All-Americans including the national runner-up in women's foil, Andy Ma announced a challenging 2012-13 fencing schedule that promises to have both the men's and women's teams primed to compete with the nation's elite when the NCAA Championships get underway in late March.

As in recent years, the Quakers will get the season started with a trip to Penn State for the Garret Open. The women will start the competition off on Nov. 3 with the men following up on Nov. 4. The Garret Open, now in its 41st year, is not a team event; rather, each individual will be competing on their own to try to capture the title in their respective weapon category.

The teams will be back in action in early December with a full weekend of new events. On Dec. 1, the teams head to Poughkeepsie, N. Y. for the Vassar Invitational. The next day, they continue up to Massachusetts to take part in the Brandeis Invitational.

When the teams gather back together in January, they will likely have the opportunity to prove themselves against some highly ranked opponents at the Penn State Invitational on January 12. The men's team defeated the Nittany Lions twice last season, once when PSU was ranked No. 1 in the country, and then a month later after they had slipped to No. 2.

The Quakers will stay local on the weekend of Jan. 26-27, going to Temple for this year's version of the Philadelphia Invitational. The women, who compete on the 26th, have been undefeated in the meet for the past two years save for a single match-up each season with Northwestern. The men get going on the 27th and a year ago rode an emotionally-charged 14-13 victory over Sacred Heart in its season opener to a 16-0 start that left them as the nation's last undefeated team.

On Feb. 2, both teams travel to MIT for the New England Invitational, a final tune-up before the Ivy League Round Robins on Feb. 9-10. This year's Round Robins will take place at Harvard, with both the men and women splitting their matches over the course of the two days.

Following an off week, the men once again make their way up Broad Street for the Temple Invitational on Feb. 23. On Feb. 24, both Quaker squads make the trek to Columbus, Ohio for the third annual United States Collegiate Weapon Squad Championships. In the event's first year, both Penn teams claimed overall team titles, a feat the men were able to repeat in 2012 while the women finished fourth.

This season's NCAA Regionals will be held March 9 at a school to be determined. Last season at Lafayette, Penn was able to qualify 10 of a possible 12 fencers for the NCAA Championships based on their finishes at the regional. This year's NCAA Championships will be held in San Antonio, Texas from March 21-24.

Penn concluded the 2011-12 season in seventh place nationally. Sophomore Luona Wang battled her way to the final in women's foil, falling in the national title bout to Evgeniya Kirpicheva of St. John's, 15-8, but earning first-team All-America honors in her freshman season. Senior Amrit Bhinder joined her as an honorable mention All-America in women's epee. On the men's side, senior Evan Prochniak was a second-team All-America in sabre while sophomore Rene Gannon-O'Gara came on strong as the year progressed, becoming an honorable mention All-America in epee at the national meet.
