All Updated Draws Through Day 2 (PDF)
PHILADELPHIA - It
is an all-Ivy semifinal field in the singles brackets of the Cissie Leary Invitational. Yale leads the way with three players, Penn and Cornell each have two, and Columbia has one. Junior
Stephanie Do faces Annie Sullivan from Yale in the Flight A draw and sophomore
Alex Ion will play Cornell's Lauren Frazier in the Flight B draw. All matches
will begin at 9:15 on Sunday morning.
The day started off great for the Quakers when Do defeated
Tiana Takenaga from Columbia, 6-2, 6-4, in the Round of 16. Do next met another
Columbia player, Bianca Sanon, in the quarterfinals. The pair has matched up twice
every year in each of the past two years, and has a 2-2 head-to-head record
against each other. In their last encounter, Sanon bested Do 6-1, 6-3 in a dual
meet, but Do was the one who came out triumphant today. After dropping the
first set 6-1, Do stormed back to take the second set, 6-2. The 10-point match
tiebreak was tight, but Do prevailed in the end, 10-7.
Ion had a tougher time in her Round of 16 match versus
Carmen Lai from Delaware. After losing the first set 6-3, she fought back to
claim the second set, 7-5, to force a third set supertiebreaker, which she won
10-3. Ion advanced to the semifinal match when her quarterfinals opponent from
Akron retired after Ion took the first set, 6-4.
Fellow sophomore Sol Eskenazi also will still play on
Sunday; she is still alive in the consolation singles bracket. After falling in
the second round of the main draw on Friday, Eskenazi was victorious in her two
consolation singles matches Saturday, winning them both easily in straight
sets. She will take on Janet Liu from Dartmouth tomorrow in the consolation
quarterfinals.
In the only doubles main draw match the Quakers had on
Saturday, junior Stephanie Do and partner sophomore Srinidhi Raghavan lost in a
close 8-6 match to the duo of Lauren Frazier and Sarah O'Neil from Cornell. One
Penn doubles team was successful today, however. Last year's No. 1 tandem of
Eskenazi and senior Jules Rodin breezed through the doubles consolation rounds,
beating their opponents from Delaware and Bowdoin, 8-4 and 8-2, respectively.
They will also be in action on Sunday and will face the team from Richmond,
Anna Abadias and Elizabeth Sims.
