All Final Brackets
PHILADELPHIA - The
16th annual Cissie Leary Invitational wrapped up on a brisk fall day on Sunday.
Although things did not turn out how Penn wanted them to in the main draw
semifinals, sophomore Sol Eskenazi was successful in the consolation brackets.
Sunday morning started with junior Stephanie Do and
sophomore Alex Ion both on court for their semifinals matches. Playing in the
Flight B semifinals versus Lauren Frazier of Cornell, Ion dropped the first set
6-4. It was on serve early in the second set until Frazier broke Ion at 3-2 and
did not look back from there, winning 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the finals.
In the Flight A semifinals, Do was quickly down 0-3 in the
first set to Yale's Annie Sullivan. Sullivan was serving for the set at 5-1,
but Do broke her serve and won the following game to push it to 5-3. After a
long service game, Sullivan held to take the first set 6-3. In the second set,
Do was broken in the first game and was not able to recover, falling 6-3, 6-1.
Meanwhile in the consolation brackets, Eskenazi easily took
care of her Dartmouth opponent, Janet Liu, 6-2, 6-3. Eskenazi was supposed to
play another Dartmouth player, Akiko Okuda, but she defaulted instead to focus
on her main draw doubles semifinals match. With the walkover, Eskenazi is essentially
the Flight A consolation winner.
Eskenazi was also still alive in the doubles consolation
with partner senior Jules Rodin. They played their semifinals match today
against Anna Abadias and Elizabeth Sims from Richmond. The Richmond duo were
serving for the match at 7-3, but Eskenazi and Rodin broke and held the
following game to make it 7-5. Richmond then served for the match again and
Abadias and Sims finally converted on the sixth match point to take the match,
8-5.
Penn will have next weekend off and will be back in action
at the William & Mary Invitational the following weekend. Eskenazi will
participate in the qualifiers for the ITA All-American Singles Championships at
the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, California starting on Oct. 2nd.
Rodin will join her there for the ITA All-American Doubles Championships and
will play their first match in the main draw on Oct. 4th. They are one of 24 doubles
pairings across the nation to be entered into the main draw.
