2012-13 Penn Men's Basketball Schedule
PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's basketball program has announced its 2012-13 schedule. The Quakers will play 31 regular-season games for the second year in a row, with at least 13 of them taking place at The Palestra.
The Quakers will tip off the season Friday, Nov. 9 when UMBC comes to town. The following Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 12-13, Penn is at Virginia to participate in the NIT Season Tip-Off South regional. The Red and Blue will face Delaware in a first-round game at 9:30 p.m. on Monday. On Tuesday, Penn will either play Fairfield at 4:30 p.m. or Virginia at 7 p.m., depending on the results of Monday's game.
After a one-year hiatus, Penn and Drexel renew their neighborhood tussle on Saturday, Nov. 17 at The Palestra. Thanksgiving week is blocked off for the NIT. If Penn wins both of its games in Virginia, it will play in the NIT semifinals and final that Wednesday and Friday at New York's famed Madison Square Garden. However, if the Quakers lose at all in Virginia they will be relegated to a consolation bracket at a site to be determined. Those games would take place Monday, Nov. 19 and Tuesday, Nov. 20.
Binghamton comes to town on Wednesday, Nov. 28, and then Penn heads to State College to face Penn State for the first time since the 2009-10 season. One week later, the Quakers host their first Philadelphia Big 5 game of the year as Villanova comes to The Palestra.
After the fall exam break, Penn is at Delaware on Friday, Dec. 21 -- the second regular-season meeting between these two teams. The last time Penn played a non-Ivy and non-Big 5 team twice in one season? Try St. John's, way back in 1980-81, once in the Red Storm's Lapchick Tournament on campus and the second time as part of the Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden. The Quakers are at Wagner on Thursday, Dec. 29, and then they ring in the New Year at one of the classic venues in college basketball, Butler's Hinkle Fieldhouse, on Wednesday, Jan. 2. It will mark Penn's first game in Hinkle.
Penn's second Big 5 game takes place at La Salle on Saturday, Jan. 5, and then Lafayette -- with former Penn assistant Fran O'Hanlon at the helm -- comes to The Palestra on Tuesday, Jan. 8.
The Penn-Princeton rivalry will write its next chapter on Saturday, Jan. 12 at the Tigers' Jadwin Gym and will open the Ivy League season for both programs. The following Thursday Penn is at NJIT, and then on Saturday, Jan. 19, the Quakers play Saint Joseph's in their annual Palestra battle. SJU is officially the host of this year's game. Penn is at Temple to close out the Big 5 season on Wednesday, Jan. 23.
Penn's first four Ivy League games in February are at home, beginning with Columbia and Cornell on Feb. 1-2 and continuing with Yale and Brown on Feb. 8-9. The Brown game will mark a homecoming of sorts for the Bears' new head coach, Mike Martin, who was an assistant coach with the Quakers for six years before leaving this summer to take the head coaching job at his alma mater.
Penn will play four straight Ivy League road games after that, facing defending champion Harvard and Dartmouth on Feb. 15-16 and then making the New York swing to Cornell and Columbia on Feb. 22-23. The Quakers are home one final weekend on March 1-2, hosting Dartmouth and then Harvard, and then they are at Brown and Yale on March 8-9. As always, the regular season ends Tuesday, March 12 with Princeton -- this time at The Palestra.
