PHILADELPHIA - Women's basketball season is officially underway at the
University of Pennsylvania. The 2012-13 Quakers began their first set of preseason practices
on Saturday.
Under fourth-year head coach Mike McLaughlin, the
Quakers return 10 letterwinners from a season ago and bring in three
new members in the Class of 2016 - a well-decorated trio featuring two guards in Keiera Ray and Rayne Connell, while Brooklyn
Juday has the potential to play at both the forward and guard position. The group of 15 had their first official practice on Saturday.
The Quakers lost two senior starters to graduation last
year, but return leading scorer Alyssa Baron and Big 5 Rookie of the Year Kara Bonenberger. In just two seasons in a Penn uniform, Baron is a
two-time All-Ivy recipient, a six-time Ivy Player of the Week and
three-time Big 5 Player of the Week. Bonenberger earned the Big 5's top rookie honor in 2012-13
after she finished second in the Ivy League in field goal percentage
and led the Quakers in rebounding and blocks. She started 12 games in
her rookie campaign and finished second on the team in scoring.
The Quakers will begin their 2012-13 campaign on Friday, Nov. 9 at Norfolk State. Tip off is
at 6 p.m. The schedule is also highlighted by a Holiday Tournament at Iowa State, a member of the Big 12, and the home opener against Virginia, a member of the ACC.
