Ivy League Release

After a weekend in which she averaged 8.50 digs per set, junior libero Dani Shepherd has been named Ivy League Player of the Week for Oct. 2-8. Shepherd becomes the first Quaker since Julia Swanson (Nov. 18, 2010) to earn the league's top weekly honor.

On Friday night against Cornell, Shepherd started out her weekend with 25 digs in the Quakers' 3-0 win over the Big Red.  After a slow start with just four digs in the first set, she came back with 12 digs in the second set and nine more in the third. In those final two sets, Cornell hit only .058 and .043.

The next night was more of the same as Shepherd led Penn's defensive output with 26 digs, setting the tone for the match with 13 in the first set alone. She continued to stymie Columbia's attack with six more in the second set and seven in the third set as the Red and Blue confounded the Lions in yet another 3-0 victory.

At 6.63 digs per set on the season, Shepherd leads the nation in the category, ahead of Chattanooga's Paula Passmore by 0.38. Fittingly, in a week where she became the first Quaker since Swanson to win Ivy League Player of the Week, she passed the former Penn great for sixth all-time in school history in digs, now sitting at 1,131 for her career.

Penn hits the road this weekend for an important pair of Ivy League contests. On Friday, the Red and Blue square off with the Brown Bears at 7 p.m. That's followed on Saturday evening with a 5 p.m. contest against Ivy co-leaders, the Yale Bulldogs.
