Brackets Through Saturday (pdf)

New Haven, Conn. -
The Penn men's tennis team wrapped up play on Saturday at the ITA Northeast Regional, hosted by Yale. Of the six Quakers entered in the competition, five won at least one singles match, but the Red and Blue were eliminated from the tournament prior to completion of play on Saturday, which ended with matches set for Sunday in the Round of 16.

Of the 96 players in the draw, 32 were seeded and given first round byes. Penn's own Jeremy Court and Nikola Kocovic were among those 32. The other Quakers in the draw went a perfect 4-0 in first round matches, though it wasn't easy. All four needed third sets to cast aside their opposition and move to the Round of 64. Vim De Alwis was down a set after a 6-1 defeat to Harrison McCormack of Army, but the freshman stormed back to win the final two sets at love. Elsewhere, sophomore Ismael Lahlou downed Mischa Koran of Fordham, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, Austin Kaplan shook off a poor second set to move past Cornell's Spencer Clark 6-3, 0-6, 6-2, and Blaine Willenborg persevered to defeat Zach Morris of Bryant, 7-5, 6-7, 6-3. All four plus Court would be eliminated in the following round. After his bye, Kocovic clinically dispatched Jason Brown of Yale, 6-4, 6-3, but fell short of advancing to tomorrow's action after a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Dragos Ignat of Columbia.

In doubles, only the team of Kaplan and Kocovic survived the first round, advancing to the Round of 32 after an 8-6 over the Fordham tandem of Alla and Kowalski. In the second round, the Penn team was eliminated by Lampa and Mihai of St. John's.

With the end of the ITA Regional, Penn closes out its fall portion of the schedule. The Quakers will be back in action on Feb. 2 when they travel to Penn State for their first team dual meet of the season. The next day, they welcome Buffalo to the Levy Tennis Pavilion for a home match beginning at 2 p.m.
