Penn Heavyweight Rowing on Twitter

PRINCETON -
In a crowded Princeton Chase on Sunday, Penn's heavyweight rowing team was not only racing against top-notch competition, the Quakers were racing to stay ahead of the elements associated with the impending arrival of Hurricane Irene. Whatever the motivation, Penn responded to the tune of a fifth-place finish in the varsity eight out of 49 boats.

Penn's A boat navigated the three-mile course in a time of 12:38.584, improving six places from an 11th-place finish in 2011. The Quakers were just over 1.5 seconds behind fourth place finisher Cornell, and 13.190 seconds behind winner Princeton. The Quakers were 1.644 seconds clear of its next competitor, Navy, and also ahead of the A boats from Boston University, Syracuse, Georgetown and Columbia who rounded out the top 10. Penn's B boat was 25th in the varsity eight while the C crew was 44th.

Penn's B boat in the varsity four was 13th out of 47 boats entered, finishing in a time of 14:14.120. Cornell was the winner of that race, needing 13:43.951 to win. Penn's A boat was 19th in 14:25.659 while the C boat was 31st in 15:00.499.

The Novice eight jumped right into the rivalry with Princeton, finishing second to the Tigers in a time of 13:03.899. The A boat was second out of 33 boats, 12.6 seconds behind the Tigers, but 2.131 seconds ahead of third-place Cornell. Penn's B crew was 20th in a time of 14:10.753 while its C boat was 31st in 15:28.916.

Daren Frankel and Alex Schade were 11th in the pairs race in 16:21.732. Richard Censits and Alexander Buck were 13th in 16:24.510.
