PHILADELPHIA – For the third consecutive year, Penn Athletics honored the women’s tennis team for having the highest team GPA among all other women’s teams. All three years have been garnered while under the supervision of fourth-year head coach Sanela Kunovac.

The Quakers off-the-court success, however, does not overshadow their great play on it. Kunovac sent two players to Los Angeles, Calif. for the women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women’s All-America Championships. Although last season Penn had a great showing at the ITA Regionals, with three of six players advancing past the first round, this is the first time since 2010 that the Quakers have advanced a player to the national tournament.

Penn sent sophomore Sol Eskenazi in the singles draw and senior Jules Rodin, paired with Eskenazi, for the doubles draw. The two merited their place in the ITAs by compiling a 10-4 overall record in doubles competition in 2011-12. In both draws, Penn played with some of the best competition in the country.

Not finished with her national success, Eskenazi paired up with freshman Sonya Latycheva for the Northeast ITA Regionals at Army. The pair – now 8-0 together in 2012 – blazed its road to the ITA Regional Doubles Title by defeating six different opponents. The title earns them a spot in the USTA/ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 8-11.

Once Penn’s talented doubles pair finishes its competition in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., the Quakers will be off for the rest of the term. They will resume play with their spring schedule beginning Jan. 19 when the Quakers welcome Lehigh and Saint Joseph’s to the Levy Tennis Pavilion.
