State College, Pa. - Junior Michael Mills became the first Penn sabre to win Penn State's Garret Open on Sunday, outlasting 42 other competitors to claim the victory.

The Garret Open, in its 41st year, has traditionally been one of the first competitions of the season for the Quakers. The event puts fencers into an environment similar to what they will face at the NCAA Championships in March, when they are fencing as individuals rather than as a team.

The Quakers had six other top-10 finishers on Sunday. Senior captain Evan Prochniak finished in fourth place behind Mills in sabre, while Steven Yang closed out in seventh. A pair of freshmen got off to promising starts in their collegiate careers as well. Adam Elkassas came in fifth in the foil competition while Ayyub Ibrahim finished eighth in epee. Other solid performances came from Jason Chang (ninth, foil) and Clifford Fishler (10th, epee).

Penn returns to competition on Saturday, December 1, when they travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. to take part in the Vassar Invitational.
