Women’s Squash 2012-13 Schedule
NEW HAVEN, Conn. –
Squash is back for another Ivy League season, as the men and women competed at
the Ivy League Scrimmages in New Haven, Conn. from Nov. 10-11. The women took
the top spot, beating Cornell, Harvard and Yale. The men’s side finished sixth,
dropping the fifth-place playoff to Dartmouth.
The Ivy Scrimmages are an exhibition tournament for all of
the Ivy teams to work out the kinks, so the result will not count toward the
regular season.
The women’s team, ranked No. 5 in the Dunlop 2012-13 Women’s
College Squash Preseason poll, began against Cornell in the quarterfinals. The
Quakers rolled 8-1 over the No. 6 Big Red, moving on to the semifinals. There
Penn faced last year’s national champion, No. 1 Harvard. The Red and Blue took
down the Crimson, 6-3, and advanced to the final against the host, No. 2 Yale.
Penn won the Ivy League Scrimmages, 7-2, over the Bulldogs.
“Many of the teams were missing players due to injury, but
it was a great way to start the season,” said assistant coach Amy Gross.
“Women’s squash hopes to contend for the Ivy and national titles this season.”
Gross’ expectations are matched by the fact that Penn will
return the entire squad from 2011-12, when the women finished third in the
Ivies and was 10-4 overall.
On the men’s side, No. 9 Penn fell to No. 4 Cornell, 7-2, in
the quarterfinals. Next, the Quakers met No. 10 Columbia, topping the Lions
5-4. The Quakers advanced to the fifth-place playoff against No. 8 Dartmouth.
The Red and Blue dropped the match, 5-4, as Penn’s No. 8 Jack Maine defaulted
due to injury.
“There were two extremely close five-game matches at the No.
2 and No. 3 positions against Dartmouth,” said Gross. “We are hoping to improve
that finish throughout the season.”
The men finished 2-5 in Ivy League competition last season,
good for sixth. With lone senior Dan Greenberg looking to fill the shoes of
departed 2011-12 second-team All-CSA and first-team All-Ivy performer Thomas
Mattsson at the No. 1 spot, the young team is looking to improve its
head-to-head results in the Ivy League.
Both teams begin their 2012-13 campaign on Saturday in
Washington, D.C., facing Bates at 2 p.m. and George Washington at 6 p.m.
