Day One Results (pdf)

GAMBIER, Ohio - A big night from junior Shelby Fortin has staked the women's swimming team to an 85-point lead over Kenyon after the first night of the Total Performance Invitational. The Quakers have compiled 181 points through just two events with Kenyon well back with 96. Third-place Davidson sits on 61 points.

The night began with the 800 Freestyle Relay. Swimming the opening leg, Fortin opened up a lead of over two-and-a-half seconds for her Penn 'A' team, a lead that only swelled as the race progressed. When all was said and done, Fortin, Dayae Choi, Annie McCotter and Sydney Stinner came in first with a time of 7:25.05. Penn's 'B' team of Bernadette D'Alonzo, Morgan Scott, Megan Alexander and Blair Webb finished fourth in 7:36.48.

That race proved to be just prelude for Fortin, who closed the night by swimming in the 1650 Freestyle. After missing last year's Total Performance Invitational , the five-time Ivy League champion came out with a point to prove, blasting the previous pool record by nearly 12 seconds and taking .01 off the school record that she set last year at the Ivy League Championships, touching the wall in 16:32.87.

She wasn't the only Quaker to swim well in the event. In fact, the Red and Blue supplied the top five finishers in the distance event, with Kristi Edleson (16:54.12), Stinner (17:04.11), McCotter (17:07.10) and Alexander (17:11.59) all managing to stay out in front of Kenyon's best.

Action resumes tomorrow morning from the Kenyon Aquatic Center with preliminary races beginning at 9:30 a.m. Tomorrow's championship and consolation finals will begin at 5:30 p.m.
