GAMBIER, Ohio -
The men's swimming team wasted no time in opening up a commanding lead through only two events after the first night of competition at the Total Performance Invitational at Kenyon College. Penn racked up 191 points to hold a 93-point lead on the hosts, with third place Carnegie Mellon well back with 58 points.

Thursday's lone individual swim came in the 1650 Freestyle. The Quakers put four swimmers in the top five, and seven in the top nine to gain early control over the proceedings. Chris Swanson won in his first collegiate attempt at the 1650, finishing in 15:21.21 and coming in nearly 14 seconds ahead of second place, breaking former Quaker James Fee's pool record in the process. Bradley Wachenfeld (15:35.41), Alex Elias (15:42.26) and Stephen Carroll (15:49.64) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

The night ended with the 800 Freestyle Relay. Penn's 'A' team of Chris Fleming, Konner Scott, Alex Porter and Rhoads Worster missed out on the victory by less than two-tenths of a second to Kenyon despite blistering third and fourth legs from Porter and Worster, who each cut over a second off the Lords' lead. The Quaker 'B' team of Eric Schultz, Dillon McHugh, Swanson and Wachenfeld were close behind in third place, touching the wall in 6:41.35.

Action resumes tomorrow morning from the Kenyon Aquatic Center with preliminary races beginning at 9:30 a.m. Tomorrow's championship and consolation finals will begin at 5:30 p.m.
