The No. 14 Penn men’s squash team welcomes No. 17 Navy to the Ringe Squash
Courts on Thursday for its first home match of the season. The match will begin
at 5 p.m. as the Quakers (2-2) look to bounce back from a tough loss at
Williams last Friday. They will face a stout Midshipmen team (18-2) that is
looking for its third straight win.
The two teams last met in Annapolis, Md. on Dec. 7 of last
season, a close 5-4 win for the Red and Blue. Senior captain Danny Greenberg,
then playing at No. 3 in the ladder, took the decisive five-set match over Navy’s
current No. 2, Jim Kacergis, 3-2. The last time the Midshipmen made the trip to
the Ringe Courts the match wasn’t as close, the Quakers sweeping to a 9-0 win
on Dec. 9, 2010. The Red and Blue lead the all-time series 42-26 and have taken
22 of 32 matchups in Philadelphia.
This time around, the match to watch will be the battle at
No. 1 as Greenberg (2-2) faces off with Andrew McGuinness (19-1). The two last
met in the Round of 16 at last season’s CSA Individual Championships. Penn’s
captain did away with the then-freshman McGuinness in straight sets, 3-0.
Navy has been extremely active early this season, having
already played 20 matches. The Middies began the season Nov. 2-4 as host of the
Navy Invitational, during which it played seven matches. The Midshipmen won
every one of those matches, 9-0, their highest ranked opponent being then-32nd ranked
Bucknell. The next weekend they hosted the Navy Veterans Weekend Round Robin,
where they played and swept another six matches, 9-0, their highest ranked
opponent then-No. 25 Hobart.
The Midshipmen’s two defeats on the year came against two opponents
familiar to Penn fans. The first was a 5-4 loss to No. 15 Bates at home on Nov.
18. Penn lost to that same Bates team just one day earlier in Washington, D.C.
by the same score. Navy’s other loss was at the hands of eighth-ranked Dartmouth,
6-3 in Boston, Mass. on Dec. 1, an Ivy League opponent Penn will play on Jan.
13 in its first weekend of Ivy action.
