STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Behind several IC4A qualifying performances, the University of Pennsylvania men's track & field team finished seventh at Penn State's Sykes and Sabock Challenge Cup on Saturday in State College, Pa.

Penn finished seventh as a team with 43 points. Among the 14 schools at the meet, Penn State claimed the team title on its home track with 133 points.

The top two finishers in the 2,000-meter steeplechase were wearing the Red and Blue. Senior Michael Kiley and freshman Brendan Smith finished first and second, respectively, and were well ahead of the rest of the field. Kiley finished in 5:47.33 and his teammate was just three seconds behind. They were the only two runners to break six minutes in the event.

Freshman Tim Hamlett scored in the seldom-run 600 meters for the Quakers. Hamlett came across in 1:21.05 to finish fifth overall and second in his heat. Hamlett was also a part of Penn's scoring 4x400-meter relay. Allante Keels, Hamlett, Harrison Scharf and Tom Timmins finished fourth in 3:16.51.

The top two high jumpers in the Ivy League went head-to-head and finished in a tie for first. Montez Blair of Cornell and junior Maalik Reynolds each passed the bar at 2.16 meters (7 feet, 1 inch). Freshman Thomas Pitt also scored in the event for the Quakers as he finished eight with a clearance of 2.06 meters (6-09 ft.). Both are IC4A qualifiers.

In the shot put, Jake Brenza was seventh with a toss of 16.11 meters (52-10.75 ft.) for another two team points. While in the 5,000 meters, senior Kevin Foy finished in 15:01.56 and earned five points for the Quakers as the fourth man to cross the finish line.

Sophomore Mato Bekelja was just outside the scoring in the 800 meters, but he did finish with an IC4A qualifying time. His season-best time of 1:53.84 was good for a 10th-place finish. Likewise for freshman Clark Shurtleff who was 13th in the mile with an IC4A qualifying time of 4:13.36.

Next week Penn travels to the Armory for Friday's Rider/Lafayette Invitational.
