PHILADELPHIA - For the second straight year, in its only December meet, the Univeristy of Pennsylvania indoor women's track and field team will head to Lewisburg, Pa., for the Bison Opener hosted by Bucknell University on Saturday at Gerhard Fieldhouse.
The first event is the long jump at 9:30 a.m., while the first running event of the season, the 5,000 meters, is set to take off at 10:15 a.m. The meet will then conclude with the 4x400 relay at 4:05 p.m.
Penn will be one of 12 teams competing at the season-opening meet. Joining the Quakers and the host Bison, who are defending Patriot League champions, are Bloomsburg, Georgetown, Howard, Kutztown, Lock Haven, McDaniel, Shippensburg, St. Francis (Pa.), Susquehanna and UMBC.
The Quakers are coming off of a cross country season win which they finished sixth at the Heptagonal Championships five weeks ago and an outdoor season where they won two individual Heps titles, eight earned All-Ivy status and five qualified for the NCAA Championships.
The indoor track and field team is coming off of a 2009-10 campaign where Kathryn Gevitz won the Heptagonal title in the triple jump, Jamie Massarelli won Penn's first individual ECAC title since 2006 and five Quakers earned All-Ivy. Three of those All-Ivy honorees - juniors Paige Madison, Victoria Strickland and Renee McDougall - return for the 2010-11 season.
Following this season-opening event, the Quakers' indoor track and field season will kick into full gear in January. The first scheduled meet for the Red and Blue is Saturday, Jan. 15 at the Navy Open in Annapolis, Md.
