Men's Squash Splits Against St. Lawrence and Williams

PHILADELPHIA - Looking to start the season 6-0 for the second time in three seasons, the University of Pennsylvania men's squash team (5-1) took on St. Lawrence and Williams at home at The Ringe. While the Quakers' record didn't remain unblemished, they finished on a high note. After falling 6-3 to St. Lawrence, Penn defeated Williams 9-0 to split the double-header.

Inside the Numbers

* The Saints and Quakers have had their fair share of dramatic battles over the past few years. The Red and Blue came out on top the last two times winning 5-4. This time it was St. Lawrence that came through.

* Andrew Douglas remains undefeated in his freshman campaign. Douglas has lost just one game all season.

* David Yacobucci, Karim Hussein, and Yash Bhargava saw their undefeated records come to an end on Sunday. All of their losses came against St. Lawrence.

* The Red and Blue's 9-0 win over Williams marks their third 9-0 victory of the season. The Quakers have done that just twice in the first six matches in each of the last three years.

* Eight of the Quakers' nine wins against Williams ended in three games. That's the most in one match this year for the Red and Blue.

How it Happened

Coming into Sunday the Quakers were looking to repeat what they did in 2015 and defeat St. Lawrence and Williams in the same weekend to improve to 6-0. While history did not repeat itself, the Red and Blue did finish the day on a high note as they swept Williams to earn their third 9-0 sweep of the season.

The Red and Blue started their day against a team that they've had several tight battles with the last few years. The previous two times the teams have met, Penn won just 5-4 each time. Sunday, the Red and Blue would come on the other side of that.

After tough losses in the middle of the line-up, Max Reed was the first player to get the Quakers on the board as he won 11-9, 11-7, 11-9 at the ninth slot. At eight Wil Hagen pulled out a dramatic come from behind victory in which he lost the first two games. The sophomore went down 7-11, 9-11, before winning the final three games 12-10, 11-9, 11-4.

At the top of the lineup, Andrew Douglas brought the match closer with a 3-0 win, but it would not be enough. Unable to get a win in the 2-7 slots, the Quakers were not able to come out on top against St. Lawrence this time around as they fell 6-3.

The Red and Blue would have a chance to bounce back however as they played Williams later in the afternoon. Eight of the nine Quakers won their matches convincingly in three games. Karim Hussein fell in the opening game of his match 11-6, but managed to win the next three to earn his fifth win of the season.
