PHILADELPHIA - To wrap up the 2017 season, the University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team will send 12 gymnasts to the USA Gymnastics Collegiate Nationals hosted by Seattle Pacific University in Seattle, Wash. The action is set to begin Friday, April 7 at 5 p.m. EST.
Headlining the lineup for the Quakers are both seniors, Rachel Graham and Kelly Tan, as well as captains Caroline Moore and Kyra Levi. Graham will take the floor at USAGs for the fourth time in her career, while the appearance will be the second for Tan.
Appearing in the first session on Friday will be Nicole Swirbalus (vault, beam, floor), Tara Mills (vault), Alex Kothe (bars), Caroline Mitsch (bars), Tan (beam), and Alex Hartke (floor). Following in session two is Kellie Flavin (vault, bars, floor), Ally Podsednik (vault, beam), Moore (vault, beam, floor), Emma Cullen (vault, bars), Levi (bars, floor), and Graham (beam, floor).
Those who advance to the final round will compete on Sunday, April 9 at 4 p.m. EST.
Moore led the way for Penn with the best scores on the year in vault, beam and floor. The sophomore landed two vault championships, both at the Ivy Classic and the ECAC Championship, with a career-best score of 9.850 at Temple. Moore also notched a career-high 9.875 on beam at Temple, while scoring a 9.875 on floor earlier in the year in a win against Yale.
Five of Penn's six freshmen will compete for the Red and Blue, highlighted by Flavin who will compete in three events including vault, bars and floor. Flavin's top score came on bars with a 9.775, but the rookie is riding high on floor, finishing with a season-high 9.750 last time out at the ECAC Championship. Cullen made history for the Quakers this season, boasting the second-best program score on bars with a 9.925 en route to leading the Red and Blue to the best team score in the event in history (49.200).
The Quakers finished the season with an average score of 192.183 and a season-high score of 193.950 at the Temple quad-meet (ranking fifth in school history). Penn boasted several record book performances during the 2017 season, including Moore's heroic scores on vault, beam and floor, Cullen's bars mark at Temple, Levi's score of 9.900 on bars at Temple, Swirbalus' score of 9.850 on beam, Hartke's 9.875 on floor, the team's 49.025 on floor and 49.200 on bars.
