PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team looked to get their spring season off to a strong start against Old Dominion. The Quakers however, came up just short as they fell in narrow fashion, 4-3.
Starting the day in doubles, Penn didn't get the start they were hoping for as they lost two of three losing narrowly at number one and number three by the score of 6-4.
Josh Pompan and
Nicholai Westergaard pulled out a 7-5 win at number two, but eading into singles, The Red and Blue would be down 1-0.
In singles, the Quakers evened things up with
Kyle Mautner earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory at number one to tie the match up at one apiece.
Pompan fell narrowly at number two in straight sets decided by one break each, 6-4, 6-4. Needing to win three of the final four matches in singles, Penn got one back at number three as Dimitry Shatalin showed resilience after losing the opening set 3-6 to come back and win the next two 6-4, 6-2.
Down 2-3, Penn would look to Westergaard to tie things up at 3-3. However, after winning the opening set 7-6, the senior fell 2-6, 2-6 as Old Dominion clinched the match. No. 6
Noah Makarome defeated Javier Jover Maestre in three sets, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to give the Quakers their third point.

The Quakers head to Virginia next week to take on William & Mary and VCU.
