PHILADELPHIA - An impressive day on floor exercise that saw the University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team tie the school record in the event highlighted a busy day of action on Senior Day at The Palestra. As a team, the Quakers finished third out of four, but posted a new season-best score for the fifth time in as many meets. Penn won one individual and one team title on the day, both on floor.
VAULT
The Quakers began the day on vault, and steadily produced higher scores after each routine. In her second meet back from injury, senior
Megan Finck notched a 9.550, followed by another solid performance from junior
Valerie Rube with a 9.675.
Jordyn Mannino stuck a new career-high of 9.700, followed by a 9.650 from
Caroline Moore and a 9.725 from
Ally Podsednik, just shy of her personal best. As a team, the Red and Blue finished the first rotation with a score of 48.300, their highest vault score this season.
BARS
Similar to vault, the Quakers would build their scores each performance, starting off with a 9.400 and 9.475 from freshmen
Allison Frommer and
Darby Nelson respectively.
Tara Mills hit a 9.575 in her second routine of the afternoon, before sophomore
Caroline Mitsch recorded a 9.625. The team-high would come from senior
Kyra Levi in the fifth spot, posting a 9.750, good for fourth overall on the day. As a team, Penn finished at 47.925.
BEAM
Penn continued to improve on beam, starting off with senior
Alex Hartke with a 9.625. Levi matched her career high in the second position, posting a 9.775, while
Nicole Swirbalus finished with a new season-high of 9.700. Reigning ECAC Specialist of the Week
Darcy Matsuda and
Caroline Moore finished with a 9.450 and 9.650 respectively, giving Penn a 48.200 in the third rotation.
FLOOR
The highlight of the afternoon came in the fourth and final rotation for the Quakers, as Penn saw each and every competitor either set or match a season or career-high in the event. Matsuda started off with a new personal-best score of 9.875, followed by a season-high 9.775 from Swirbalus. The momentum continued with a new season-high from
Morgan Hunker, at 9.725, while Mannino set a new career-best with a 9.825. The final two performances yielded historic results, as Levi notched a new career-high of 9.900, ranking tied for third all-time at Penn. Hartke followed that up with a 9.925, a new career-high, ranking second in program history, and the best score on floor for the Quakers since 2004. As a team, Penn posted a 49.300, tying the school record set at the Ivy Classic on March 2, 2003.
WHAT'S NEXT?
The Quakers will make the three-hour drive to State College, Pa. next week, facing the host Penn State Nittany Lions, as well as Cornell and Texas Woman's on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 4 p.m.
