Gymnastics Comes Back to Defeat Cornell on the Road

ITHACA, N.Y. - It was another come-from-behind effort for the University of Pennsylvania gymnastics program on Saturday afternoon, as the Quakers rallied in the last rotation to take down Cornell on the road 192.675-192.400. Penn grabbed two team event wins, while freshman Darcy Matsuda captured the individual victory on beam. Beam proved the highlight of the night for Penn as the Red and Blue tallied the second-highest team total in program history on their final event of the meet.

BARS
Penn started the day on bars, hitting a new season-high score of 48.075. Rookie Allison Frommer kicked things off with a new career-high score of 9.725, while Penn found success in the bottom half of its lineup featuring a career-high tying score of 9.800 from sophomore Caroline Mitsch. Senior captain Kyra Levi proved consistent as always, hitting a 9.800 for the third time in four meets this season. Alex Kothe wrapped things up with a 9.675, and the Quakers found themselves locked dead even with the Big Red after the first rotation.

VAULT
The Quakers would struggle on vault, notching a 46.850, but junior Valerie Rube again came in clutch for the Red and Blue, leading the team with a 9.550. Freshman Darby Nelson hit a 9.350, while Ally Podsednik posted a 9.325 in the anchor spot.

FLOOR
Per usual, Penn found success on floor, posting a 48.675. Matsuda began with a 9.800 while fellow rookie Jordyn Mannino matched her career-best with a 9.775. Nelson's routine earned her a 9.750, while Hartke rounded things out with a 9.725. With one rotation left however, Penn was in a tough spot, down over a point to Cornell.

BEAM
The Quakers needed a big comeback and they got one, hitting a season-best score of 49.075 on beam. All five scorers hit at least a 9.775 for Penn, starting with a 9.825 from Hartke, a new-career best from the senior. Levi followed that up with a 9.775, while Podesdnik continued her consistency with a 9.800. Matsuda captured a new best of 9.850 to win the event, while the Quakers completed the comeback with a 9.825.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Quakers return home for their first home quad meet of the season at The Palestra. Penn welcomes Bridgeport, Temple and Ursinus on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m.
