PHILADELPHIA - The ECAC announced their weekly awards on Tuesday. University of Pennsylvania freshman,
Darcy Matsuda, was named this week's "Specialist of the Week". The Specialist of the Week award is the first of Matsuda's young Penn gymnastics career.
Matsuda competed on bars and floor for the Quakers setting career highs in both. She started with a career-high of 9.85 on the balance beam and continued her outstanding weekend by hitting her second career mark of 9.8 for her floor exercise. With her career day, Matsuda helped the Quakers win both of her events and get the overall win against Ivy-rival Cornell.
The freshman played a key role as the Quakers rallied to take down Cornell on the road 192.675-192.400. On floor Matsuda set the tone with her individual score of 9.8 to help win the event and give The Red and Blue a chance heading into beam. Her outstanding performance on the balance beam, which turned out to be the performance of the night, helped Penn post its second-highest team total in program history scoring 49.075. Matsuda captured a new best of 9.850 to win the event, while the Quakers completed the comeback.
The Quakers return home for their first home quad meet of the season at The Palestra. Penn welcomes Bridgeport, Temple and Ursinus on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m.
