PHILADELPHIA - Survive and advance. Everyone knows the mantra of March, and the University of Pennsylvania (22-8, 11-3 Ivy) hopes to continue to do just that, set for the second round of the WNIT on Monday, March 18 at St. John's. A win would send the Quakers into the Round of 16 and give the senior class of
Beth Brzozowski,
Michelle Nwokedi,
Anna Ross and
Lauren Whitlatch the program record with 90 wins in their careers with the Red and Blue.
In the Series vs. St. John's: First Meeting
The Quakers have never faced off against the Red Storm on the basketball court. Coach McLaughlin earned his first victory over a team from the BIG EAST earlier this season at Villanova.

St. John's enters Monday's matchup with an overall record of 17-14 after placing fifth in the BIG East with an even mark of 9-9. The Red Storm defeated Marist, 68-47, in the opening round of the WNIT, rebounding from a loss in the quarterfinals of their conference tournament. St. John's boasts a balanced attack, with six players averaging at least nine points per game, led by Maya Singleton's 11.3 with an addition of 11.1 rebounds.
Against the BIG EAST
Coach McLaughlin is 1-8 in his career vs. the BIG EAST Conference, with each game coming against annual Big 5 foe Villanova. Penn defeated the Wildcats earlier this season on the road, 79-77.
Penn in the Postseason
Prior to this school-record stretch of six-straight postseason appearances, Penn had never been to the postseason in back-to-back years. In 2013, Penn posted the first two postseason wins in program history with home wins over Howard (65-60) and Fairfield (49-48) in the opening two rounds of the Women's Basketball Invitational. Penn then lost in the semifinals at Detroit, 71-68. The following season, the Red and Blue led fifth-seeded Texas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by as many as 15 in the first half (32-17), and seven at halftime (38-31), but ultimately fell, 79-61. In 2014, Penn earned its first-ever WNIT berth and victory with a home win over Hofstra before a close second-round loss at The Palestra to Big 5 rival Temple. The 2015-16 Quakers earned the No. 10 seed for the NCAA Tournament and fell to the University of Washington, 65-53, in College Park, Md. in the First Round. Last year, Penn entered the NCAA Tournament as a 12 seed, and at one point led No. 5 Texas A&M by 21 in the fourth quarter before getting edged by the Aggies, 63-61.
Senior Class
The senior class of Brzozowski, Nwokedi, Ross and Whitlatch has tied last year's record of 89 wins in their four-year span with the Red and Blue.
Success from Deep
Lauren Whitlatch has led the charge for a historic shooting year for the Quakers, as Penn has set the program record in 3-pointers made with 236 and counting. Penn has hit 10+ 3-pointers 10 times this year and is undefeated in those games. Whitlatch has entered the top-five in program history with 161 career makes from behind-the-arc.
Shot Blocking Ballers
While Nwokedi leads the team with 72 blocks on the year, Parker isn't far behind with 59. If the duo were their own team, they would rank ahead of 284 schools in the category.
