Brann, Pederson Earn Ivy League Weekly Awards

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania softball team took two of the three Ivy League Weekly Awards. Junior Sam Pederson earned Player of the Week, while sophomore Jennifer Brann was awarded Pitcher of the Week.

Pederson and Brann are the third and fourth Quakers to win Ivy weekly awards this season, but are the first to win player of the week and pitcher of the week. They join Tabitha Dyer and Abigail Abramson who have each won rookie of the week.

Penn is coming off of its best week of the season. The Red and Blue took all four games -- for a perfect 4-0 record -- which included their first victory over Villanova since 2012 and an Ivy series sweep over Yale.

With the wins, the Quakers are now up to 11 on the season having won seven of their last eight. They also improve to 7-5 in the Ivy League moving them to within a game of first-place Harvard.

Helping lead the way in the team's perfect week was Brann. The sophomore pitcher earned two of the team's four wins in the circle with just a .90 ERA. She threw a complete game against Yale, her third of the season, allowing only one run and clinching the series win for the Quakers. The Ivy League pitcher of the Week  also stood in the circle for three innings in the team's 5-2 win over Villanova.

Her efforts also earned her College Madness Player of the Week as well as an NFCA selected top-performer.

Brann improved to 3-4 on the season and is one of just two pitchers on the staff with an ERA below 4.00. It's her first Ivy League weekly award.

Pederson, this week's Player of the Week, has been one of the most consistent bats for the Red and Blue. She is on a 13 game hitting streak dating back to March 14. Over the weekend, the junior had six hits which included two triples, one of which brought in three runs to spark the team's 6-0 comeback against Yale. She had a team high six runs and four RBI as she slugged 1.000.

The junior is the first Quaker to be named Player of the Week since Leah Allen on March 6, 2017. She earns her second career Ivy League weekly award, as she was named Rookie of the Week on April 26, 2016.

The Quakers will be back in action on Wednesday against Drexel, before they head on the road to take on Harvard over the weekend.
