Softball Drops Both Games on Day One of Wolfpack Classic

RALEIGH, N.C. – The University of Pennsylvania softball team opened its 2023 season at the Wolfpack Classic hosted by North Carolina State University on Friday morning. The Quakers dropped both games on day one. The Red and Blue rallied in both games but eventually lost to James Madison, 7-5 and then to NC State, 15-6 in the second game.

Julia Mortimer, Dana Anderson, and Bella Fiorentino all hit opening day home runs for Penn.

FINAL: JMU 7, Penn 5
The Dukes got off to a hot start in the top of the first inning as Hannah Shifflett made the most of the first pitch of the Penn softball season with a solo shot over the centerfield wall. Fiorentino got her first strikeout of the day on the next batter. After a double, Jazmine Hall hit a two-run shot over the left field wall to give JMU a 3-0 first inning lead. The Dukes put up three more runs in the top of the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. Then added a seventh and final run in the top of the fifth.

Penn was able to limit the Dukes damage to just a pair of crooked innings and a single run in the fifth thanks to some shut down defense by sophomore Danica Larwill who snagged a line drive out of the air in the second inning to begin an inning ending double play.

The Quakers bats were held hitless through the first three innings as they only managed two walks in the second inning. Sammy Fenton broke up the Rebecca Muh's no-hitter as she led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a base hit to left for the first Penn hit of the game.

Dana Anderson got things going in the fifth inning as she hit a one out base hit up the middle. Freshman Jade Montgomery entered as a pinch runner for Anderson to make her first collegiate appearance.
Montgomery came around to score on Junior Julia Mortimer's two-run shot over the left field wall. Following an infield single and a throwing error Madison Bauerle scored on an RBI single down the left field line off the bat of Schneider for the third Penn run.

Anderson added another two runs for the Red and Blue with a two-run shot over the left center wall, scoring Alyssa Pope.

FINAL/6: NC State 15, Penn 6
The Quakers opened the second game strong with a Schneider leading off the game with a double to right and eventually scoring on an field single off the bat of Fenton.

A solo shot in the bottom of the first inning off the bat of Rebecca Murray tied the game at 1-1 after the first inning.

Penn threatened in both the second and third innings but were unable to manufacture any runs.

The Wolfpack sent 12 batters to the plate in the third inning as they scored six runs to take a 7-1 lead after three innings. NC State added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Looking to get three quick outs for the run-rule victory, Penn responded with four runs and nearly batted around in the top of the fifth to cut the Wolfpack lead to four runs.

Brianna Brown led off the fifth with a walk and scored on the next batter as Fiorentino hit a two-run shot over the center field wall. After getting her first career hit in the fourth inning, Delaney Smith recorded her first career RBI on a double to left that scored Fenton from second. Bauerle kept the inning going with an RBI base hit to left that scored Mortimer from third.

NC State responded with solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. Penn fought back with a run of its own in the top of the fifth as Anderson hit a sac fly to right that score Brown from third.
