#7 Heavyweight Rowing Competes for Blackwell Cup

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania heavyweight rowing team is back on the water on Saturday, taking on Yale and Columbia in the 84th edition of the Blackwell Cup at Orchard Beach in Overpeck Park, N.J.

The Quakers are up one spot this week in the USRowing Collegiate Poll, climbing to No. 7 in the country. Yale is two spots ahead of the Quakers, sitting at No. 5 this week. The Lions are ranked No. 18.

Last week, Penn was second in the Childs Cup to No. 3 Princeton, finishing well clear of Columbia for second place. Prior to that race, Penn had picked up two Cup wins in 2015, retaining both the McCausland Cup and Burk Cups.

Yale is 2-for-2 this spring with wins over No. 6 Brown and No. 15 Dartmouth.

The Blackwell Cup is presented for annual competition among the varsity crews of Penn, Yale and Columbia in memory of George Engs Blackwell, an 1880 Columbia graduate. The Blackwell family placed the cup into competition in 1927. Yale has 44 wins in the Blackwell Cup’s all-time series, Penn is second with 34.

The last win for the Quakers was a .7-second victory over Yale in 2002. That win was part of four consecutive victories for the Quakers in the Blackwell Cup. Penn’s last win over Columbia’s home course came in 2000.
