A letter from Coach Zeke Jones and Former Coach Roger Reina

Dear Wrestling Supporter,

It was in the Palestra, ironically, where our paths first crossed during the World Team Trials in freestyle wrestling in 1990. Little did we know that our paths would cross again 15 years later, in the form of passing on the leadership of the Pennsylvania Wrestling program. We are delighted to share in this and are writing all of our alumni, family and friends today to convey our thoughts during this critical time of transition in the history of Penn Wrestling.

While the team and staff are appropriately taking a moment to breathe, relax and reflect on this year’s season we wanted to take the time to encourage all involved with Penn Wrestling to appreciate the tremendous amount of hard work that they have put in this year. We also ask you to join us in applauding the success they garnered.

Nine individuals received ranking in the East Nine individuals were recognized in national polls Nine Penn wrestlers earned All Ivy Honors Matt Valenti was selected as EIWA Wrestler of the Year

As a team, Penn finished:

2nd at the prestigious Virginia Duals 1st at the Keystone Classic Top 10 at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas 2nd in the Ivy League race Ranked nationally in dual meet rankings the entire season 3rd at the EIWA Championships with six NCAA qualifiers and eight place winners 12th at the 2006 NCAA Championships with NCAA Champion Matt Valenti, and NCAA All American (5 th place) Matt Herrington

Change presents challenges in many ways, and also provides valuable opportunities. As a community of people that believes in the benefits of the great sport of amateur wrestling, and at the same time places appropriate value on higher education, we encourage each and every one in the Penn Wrestling family to choose this point in time and recognize what an extremely valuable opportunity we have before us.

Penn Wrestling continues to exemplify the character qualities of hard work, commitment, setting high goals, developing thoughtful plans to attain those goals, and believing in each and every team member’s right to pursue their ultimate potential...whatever that may be.

In order to truly build the foundation to accomplish this vision, the support of alumni and friends simply could not be more vital. Penn Wrestling, as we’ve come to know it, relies heavily on the financial support of our friends. Annual gifts, in particular, are the lifeblood of the program. Just as the team members dug in this year to commit their very best through a year of transition, we are asking each and every alumnus, family member and friend of Penn Wrestling to do exactly the same.

This is a proud moment for our program, and one that inspires confidence in terms of of what we can accomplish in years to come. However, in order to continue to improve our program we rely on the support of donors to Penn Wrestling. Please consider making a commitment to do your very best for the program in terms of financial support, and make a record gift.
