PHILADELPHIA Senior Leah Brogan and junior Anna Aagenes will each compete for the University of Pennsylvania women’s track and field team this weekend at the NCAA East Regional Championships in Greensboro, N.C., May 29-30.
The Regional meet begins Friday night for the Quakers when Aagenes runs in the preliminaries of the 800 meters at 7:20 p.m. Later that evening, Brogan competes in the finals of the 5,000 meters at 9:20 p.m. The finals of the 800 meters are scheduled for 6:25 p.m. Saturday. The top-five finishers in each event automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships in June.
Brogan, who won four of the six races in which she competed during the outdoor season, set her Regional mark in March at the Maryland Invitational. She won the 5,000 meters with a career-best time of 16:41.86 which currently places the Monsignor Donovan product as the fourth-best 5,000-meter runner in Penn history. Friday’s race will mark her first appearance at the NCAA Regionals.
Aagenes will also be making her first appearance at the regional level. The indoor and outdoor second-team All-Ivy honoree has run a regional worthy time on three separate occasions this season. Her best effort came at the ECAC Championships on May 16 with a personal record of 2:07.44. That time stands as third-best in school history.
Brogan currently ranks 34th in the East Region in the 5,000 meters, while Aagenes enters the meet ranked 16th in the region in the 800 meters.
