Abby Shiffler Named Assistant Women's Soccer Coach

PHILADELPHIA - University of Pennsylvania women's soccer head coach Darren Ambrose has announced the addition of Abby Shiffler to his staff. She joins Pete Pososki as an assistant coach for the Quakers.

Shiffler comes to Penn from Caldwell College, where she was an assistant coach with the women's soccer team in 2008. The Cougars went 8-11-1 last season, and lost in double overtime to Philadelphia University in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference tournament semifinal round.

A four-year starter in goal for Monmouth University from 2001-04, Shiffler recorded 280 career saves to rank third on the program's all-time list. She earned second-team All-Northeast Conference honors as a freshman while receiving the team's Rookie of the Year award. In 2002, Shiffler helped the Hawks advance to the final of the NEC Tournament, where they were eliminated in a shootout by Central Connecticut State. As a junior, she ranked second in the conference in both goals-against average and save percentage.

Shiffler graduated from Monmouth in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in political science. She served as an assistant coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Madison in 2006, and has been a goalkeeper trainer in New Jersey and Washington, D.C., for the past four years. Shiffler isa native of Hershey, Pa.

Penn opens preseason camp next Thursday, and kicks off the 2009 campaign on Friday, Sept.4 when George Mason comes to town.
