It was a happy homecoming for the Penn Alumni team as they defeated the 2004-05 varsity grapplers, 15-12, at the annual Homecoming Meet.
With the score knotted at 12-12 heading into the last match, freshman Matt Dwyer and a surprise guest, athletic trainer Jay Effrece, took to the mat for the deciding bout. Effrece earned the only point in the match, escaping in the second period.
In the first match of the evening, Randall Braunfield, C’98 defeated freshman Vince Cina, 3-0. Senior Kyle Bernholz earned the Quakers’ first points in the very next match-up by defeating John Gough, C’00, 6-4.
The Red and Blue took the next two from the Alumni as freshman Zach Shanaman defeated Tim DeAngelo, 5-2 and Rich Ferguson dominated in all three periods to beat Craig Melcher, W’02, 7-0.
Rick Springman, E’02, took junior Dustin Wiles down twice in the first period to come away with the 6-0 victory. Ethan Bullock, C’04, defeated sophomore Dan Gallagher, 3-1, while senior Marcus Schontube was victorious over 2001 All-American Mike Fickell, W’01, winning the match, 3-1.
