Amber Woo Earns Gymnastics' Second ECAC Rookie of the Week Honor

ECAC Weekly Release

PHILADELPHIA - For the second time in two weeks, gymnastics has earned the ECAC Rookie of the Week honor. This week, Amber Woo takes home the honor after classmate Amanda Schlaefer took home the first ECAC weekly award. Woo, who has competed in the all-around in each of her first two collegiate meets, had the highest all-around score of all ECAC freshmen this past week, 38.200. Woo improved her marks in three out of her four events from the first week of the season, improving her all-around score by 1.6 points from the first week.

Starting out on vault, Woo scored a 9.475 to finish that event in ninth place. On the uneven bars, the freshman set the first of her three season highs, scoring 9.5 and finishing sixth overall on that event. This mark helped Penn secure the first of two consecutive 48-plus team scores.

The second team score in excess of 48 for the Quakers came on the beam. In this event, Woo was Penn's second-highest scorer with a season-best 9.675 to finish the event in fourth place overall. Finishing up her stellar night on floor, Woo posted her third season-best mark of 9.550 on her final event. This was the second-highest Penn score for the event and sixth-best overall for the meet.

Tallying up all four of her scores, Woo finished with a 38.200 in the all-around. This was good enough to put her in fourth out of all eligible gymnasts and was Penn's second-best mark of its three all-around gymnasts. Every single tenth of a point that Woo and her teammates squeezed out last Friday night was important as Penn scored 191.975, the best mark since the 2008 season, defeating Rutgers by just five-hundredths of a point.

Woo and the rest of her teammates will look to keep the strong performances going this weekend as the Quakers visit Yale this Saturday for a 1 p.m. meet. A complete listing of the weekly award winners is available on the ECAC's website.
