PHILADELPHIA - The Ivy League has announced its weekly honors for men’s lacrosse, and Penn is well-represented as junior Craig Andrzejewski received Player of the Week and freshman Corey Winkoff shared the Rookie of the Week honor.
An attack, Andrzejewski led the Quakers with 11 points in a pair of games at the Pioneer Faceoff Classic, hosted this weekend by the University of Denver. As a result, he was one of four Penn players to earn all-tournament honors. Andrzejewski scored four goals and had two assists in the Quakers’ 13-10 win over Air Force on Saturday -- however, what was most impressive about his six points was when they came. After only dishing out an assist in the first half, he assisted on a goal that tied the game, 7-7, early in the second half, then scored all four of his goals after that to propel Penn to the victory. Sunday against Denver, Andrzejewski again led the Quakers, this time with two goals and three assists, but Penn fell to Denver, 12-11, in overtime. His second goal came with 26 seconds left in regulation and tied the game, forcing OT. For the season, Andrzejewski leads Penn with 10 assists and 17 points, and is tied for the team lead with seven goals.
Winkoff -- who shares the weekly award with Brown’s Andrew Feinberg -- scored five goals and dished off four assists at the Pioneer Faceoff Classic, giving him nine points on the weekend. In the Quaker's 13-10 win over Air Force, Winkoff scored three times and had two assists, with all three goals coming in the first half and both assists coming during Penn’s furious second-half comeback. On Sunday, against Denver, he went for two goals and two more assists; among those four points, he scored the only goal in a 5-1 Denver run late in the game, then assisted Andrzejewski’s goal with 26 seconds left that tied the game and sent it into overtime (where Denver won, 12-11). For the season, Winkoff is second on the Penn team with 12 points.
Penn is 2-2 through four games, and opens Ivy League play this weekend with a contest at Yale. A reminder that faceoff is slated for 1:30 p.m.
