Awad Earns ECAC Athlete of the Week Honors

PHILADELPHIA - Junior Thomas Awad was named the ECAC South Athlete of the Week by the conference office on Wednesday night after a school-record performance in the 5,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational.

In Palo Alto, Calif., on Saturday, Awad finished sixth among 20 runners ina mixed field of professionals and collegians. He was the second collegian to cross the finish line in the second-fastest time in Ivy League history. His record-setting time of 13:33.29 topped the school record he set last year by 15 seconds.

Awad is the first Penn athlete to earn ECAC Athlete of the Week accolades. Freshman Candace Taylor won the conference's rookie honor on last week, while freshman Barbara Biney was a rookie recipient during the indoor season.

This week, the Quakers head to Fairfax, Va., where the Red and Blue will compete in the George Mason Invitational on April 11.
