Awad Named Cross Country Male Athlete of the Week

PHILADELPHIA – announced on Wednesday its fourth release of Cross Country Athletes of the Week this season, and crowned the Male Athlete of the Week was University of Pennsylvania junior captain Thomas Awad. At the 59th annual Notre Dame Invitational last Friday, Awad led the Red and Blue to a team finish of 15th as he was the fourth runner to cross the finish line.

Racing in conditions that were not ideal for running, Awad proved he could compete with some of the best, as ten of the 24 regionally ranked teams running in the Men’s 5-Mile Blue race were also ranked nationally. The junior captain completed the water logged course in 23:26.7, just 11 seconds behind first-place finisher Mason Ferlic from Michigan.

This is Awad’s first honor this season and Penn’s third. Freshman Abby Hong was the first repeat winner of the season, earning the title of Female Rookie of the Week in week’s one and three.

The Quakers will next lace up for the Princeton Invitational on October 18. It will be the last race for the Red and Blue before the Cross Country Heptagonal Championships take place on the same course, November 1.
