PHILADELPHIA --The University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team won a pair of matches last week, picking up shutouts in both. On Monday, the Red and Blue picked up two weekly honors for their efforts as Gavin Barger and Nick Savino were recognized by the Ivy League and the Philadelphia Soccer Six.
Gavin Bargerwas named Ivy League Co-Rookie of the Week after he picked up his first career point in Tuesday's win at Saint Joseph's, assisting on the game-winning goal. Playing outside back for the Quakers, Barger was instrumental in keeping opponents off the scoreboard last week as the Red and Blue pitched two shutouts. His biggest plays often came on corner kicks, keeping Saint Joseph's and Cornell at bay despite 12 combined corners.
Nick Savino recorded his first two career wins this past week, recording the clean sheet in both victories. For his effrots, he was named Philadelphia Soccer Six Defensive Player of the Week. He was called upon to make two saves in each game, including a two-save second half on Saturday against Cornell in an Ivy League-opening win.
The Quakers (2-5-2) return to play on October 10, taking on Columbia in New York City. Kickoff against the Lions is slated for 2 p.m. on the Ivy League Digital Network.
