Baron Named Co-Ivy League Player of the Week

Ivy League Release

PHILADELPHIA - In the first road sweep in five years for the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team, sophomore Alyssa Baron had the game-clinching free throws at Brown and the game-winning basket at Yale. On Monday, the league office honored her as the Co-Ivy League Player of the Week.

It marked Baron's fourth Ivy Player of the Week award this season and sixth of her career. In addition to her seven selections as the league's Rookie of the Week last season, the Miam, Fla., native has earned 13 career weekly Ivy accolades.

Baron led the Quakers to their first Ivy road sweep since 2007 with late-game heroics on back-to-back nights. She had a game-high 23 points, including 15 in the second half at Brown. Then at Yale, she had the go-ahead basket and a team-high 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals to propel the Quakers to their first win at Lee Amphitheater in four years.

It was never more than a two possession game in the final two minutes at Brown. During that time, Baron scored six of Penn's eight points to hold off the Bears. She went 6-for-6 from the line in that span (11-for-12 for the game). With Penn up four, Baron stole Brown's inbounds pass and then sunk two free throws to seal Penn's second straight win at Providence.

At Yale, the late-game heroics were the same. A 9-0 Yale run gave the Bulldogs a one-point lead with 3:10 to play. But Baron drove the lane and floated in the eventual game-winner to put Penn up 59-58.

For the week, Baron averaged 18.0 points per game, 6.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 3.0 assists. The Gulliver Prep product was 14-of-16 (87.5%) from the free throw line, and in 74 minutes, she had just three turnovers.

Baron shared the award this week with Princeton's Devonna Allgood. Dartmouth's Milica Toskovic won rookie honors for the second time this year.

Penn's 13 wins this season are the most since 2004-05. The Quakers (13-14, 6-7 Ivy) have won four of the last five and are 5-2 in their last seven.

Baron and Allgood will meet on the court in the regular season finale at Princeton on Tuesday. Tip off is at 5 p.m. in Jadwin Gym. Subscribers to the Penn Sports Network can see this game for free on PSN.
