Ivy League Release
PHILADELPHIA - For the second time in three weeks, freshman Alyssa Baron of the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team took home the Ivy League honor as Rookie of the Week on Monday. Baron scored 15 points in a win at Rider on Tuesday and had a career-best 20 at NJIT Saturday.
Baron was forced to sit for an extended period of time in the second half at Rider due to foul trouble, but still put up 15 points and collected four rebounds in just 27 minutes. Penn's 60-45 road win marked the Red and Blue's second victory of the year - matching last season's win total. The native of Miami, Fla., also had an assist and went 5-for-7 from the free throw line to help ice the game down the stretch.
Later in the week, Baron matched a career high with 20 points in a 74-63 loss at NJIT. She was 7-for-13 (53.8%) from the floor and connected on all three of her three-point attempts. She had three rebounds and set a new collegiate best with three assists in a season-high 37 minutes.
In all, the Gulliver Prep product finished the week 12-for-28 from the floor (42.9%), including 60 percent from three-point range (3-for-5). She also went 8-for-11 from the charity stripe (72.7%), grabbed seven rebounds and had four assists.
Dartmouth's Brittany Smith and Princeton's Addie Micir split Player of the Week honors.
Baron also earned this honor on Nov. 15 after her performance in Penn's 70-59 season-opening win over Bryant. She had 17 of her game-high 20 points in the first half and finished with a game-high seven made field goals. She added three rebounds and a block, while going 7-for-15 from the floor.
This week, Baron and the Quakers are at home on Tuesday to take on Niagara at 4:30 p.m., and are then on the road at West Point, N.Y., to play Army on Saturday.
