Ivy League Release
Big 5 Release
PHILADELPHIA - Freshman Alyssa Baron swept all three Player of the Week awards on Monday, earning Co-Big 5 Player of the Week, Co-Ivy League Player of the Week and Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors. The University of Pennsylvania women's basketball standout is just the sixth Ivy player since 2001-02 to win both of the league's weekly awards.
In leading Penn to its first Big 5 win in six years and a near-upset of the top team in the Atlantic-10, Baron averaged 20.0 points per game, 4.0 rebounds per game, 4.0 assists per game and 2.0 steals per game against two Big 5 opponents. On the week, Baron shot nearly 50 percent from the floor (13-of-28) and was 50 percent from three (5-of-10).
The Miami, Fla., native helped to break a 24-game losing streak to Big 5 opponents with a game-high 17 points, including the game-winning free throws against La Salle Wednesday night at The Palestra. With 35 seconds left and Penn up two, Baron was intentionally fouled on her way to the basket. She calmly sank both technical free throws and after she was fouled on the ensuing inbounds pass, she made the next two free throws as well to seal the win.
Three days later, Baron nearly single-handedly led the Quakers over first-place Temple on Saturday. She tied a career high with 23 points and set career highs with five assists and three steals, while collecting four rebounds. With Penn trailing by 11 with just under five minutes to play, Baron scored seven straight for the Quakers and had the Red and Blue back within four in the final minute.
"Alyssa was great tonight against some excellent competition," head coach Mike McLaughlin said following Baron's 23-point effort Saturday night. "She created her own shot in many ways, she got to the foul line and she was able to step back and shoot some threes. She takes the challenge right on. I thought she played a special game tonight."
While she won the first Ivy League Player of the Week and Big 5 Player of the Week accolades of her career, Baron has now earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week recognition four times this season.
Baron also earned the Ivy Rookie honor on Nov. 15, Nov. 29 and Jan. 2. She shared her first Ivy Player of the Week honor with Megan Vazquez, and her first Big 5 honor with Temple's Shea Peddy.
