RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Pennsylvania baseball team was defeated in its first of two games versus Virginia Commonwealth University, 12-5, Tuesday afternoon.
The Quakers (1-6) totaled five runs on eight hits, led by senior Mitch Montaldo, who hit a three-run home run in a four-run second inning. Fellow senior Matt McKinnon recorded two hits in the ball game, while scoring and knocking in a run.
On the mound Penn starter Mike Reitcheck (1-1) threw five innings, allowing five runs, only two of which were earned. The left-hander struck out two batters.
VCU (6-7) matched the Quakers hit total of eight, but benefited from eight Penn errors, 3 walks, and two hit batters.
After seven and a half innings, Penn trailed 6-5, before the Rams scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
