LANTANA, Fla. The University of Pennsylvania baseball team ended its week long trip in Florida with a 13-6 loss to Fordham Saturday afternoon at the Santaluces Athletic Complex. Rams starter Javier Martinez (1-2) allowed three runs and scattered six hits over six innings.
The Rams (1-6) scored six runs combined in the third and fourth innings off Penn starter Todd Roth (0-1), all with two outs. In the third, a single to center by Jordan Lert scored two runs. With runners on the corners, Lert stole second and catcher Josh Corn’s throw bounced into center field, allowing Eric Reese to score from third and Lert to advance to third. John Mollicone then singled, scoring Lert to put Fordham up, 4-0.
With two on and two out in the fourth, Fordham’s Rich Goulian tripled to right center, scoring two. Penn (3-5) answered back in the top of the fifth when Corn stroked a three-run homer to left field to cut the deficit in half, 6-3.
Fordham wasted no time extending their lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Mollicone hit a solo shot to left off reliever Doug Brown. After back to back walks, Mike Mobbs hit a three-run shot to center to put the Rams up 10-3.
Fordham tacked on two more runs in the seventh on a two-run home run by Mobbs and one more in the ninth. Penn scored two runs in the eighth on RBI’s by Steve Gable and William Gordon. In the ninth, Corn knocked in his fourth run of the day on a ground out to second.
Penn hosts city-rival Temple in their home opener at Meiklejohn Stadium, Wednesday at 3 p.m.
