Baseball Falls to Villanova in Late Innings

PHILADELPHIA -Facing Villanova in the Liberty Bell Classic first round, the University of Pennsylvania baseball allowed eight runs in the final two innings and suffered a 9-4. Penn outhit the Wildcats 11-10, but two home runs in the final two innings sent Villanova to the second round of the tournament.

EARLY LONG BALLS:Villanova took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when J.P. Radvany hit a ball over the left field wall for his first home run of the season. The ball just cleaned the fence in front of the Quakers bullpen on a blustery day in Philadelphia.

Penn died the game in the bottom of the inning with the first-career home run from Matt O'Neill. O'Neill also went deep to left and but left no doubt with the its distance.

TESCH PROPELS PENN:Still tied at one in the fifth, Gary Tesch doubled to give the Quakers the lead and then scored on a wild pitch to put Penn on top 3-1. The Ivy League's leading hitter recorded just his second double of the season and gave the Red and Blue it's first lead of the day.

LATE LONG BALLS HURT QUAKERS:Following three shutout inning from Jack Hartman, Penn's bullpen allowed four runs in the eighth and ninth including a pair of three-run home runs to push the Wildcats to their second consecutive Liberty Bell Classic win over the Quakers.

In the eighth, it was Max Beerman who drove a ball over the right field wall for a three-run shot to give the Wildcats the lead back, but it was Todd Czinege's three-run blast to dead-center that sunk the Quakers on Tuesday afternoon.

QUAKER NOTES:Three Quakers had multi-hit games... Gary Tesch, Tim Graul, and Matt Tola all had two knocks on Tuesday... Mitch Holtz made his first start of the season and pitched four innings allowing one run on four hits... Jack Hartman pitched three scoreless innings in relief allowing just one hit... Billy Lescher was named Big Five Pitcher of the Week before the game and Tim Graul was named Ivy League Player of the Week.

UP NEXT:Penn will begin Ivy League play as it hosts Brown and Yale this weekend in doubleheaders beginning at noon on Saturday and Sunday.
