Baseball has Three Honored by Big 5

PHILADELPHIA – The 2008 All-Big 5 baseball team was announced on Monday and Penn was represented by three players among the selections. Starting pitcher Todd Roth was selected Big 5 Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive season. He was joined among the honorees by second baseman Steve Gable who was chosen Big 5 Student-Athlete of the Year and graduated first baseman Kyle Armeny who earned All-Big 5 honors. Voting for the awards was done by the head coaches and sports information directors of the five colleges and universities that make up the Philadelphia Big 5.

Roth, who also earned a spot on the All-Big 5 team at starting pitcher to go with his Pitcher of the Year award, is the first pitcher in Big 5 history to win the Pitcher of the Year award in back-to-back seasons. He led the Big 5 and the Ivy League in ERA as he allowed 2.32 earned runs a game over the course of the season. He struck out 54 batters in his 62 innings of work. He is the first hurler in Penn history to repeat as Ivy League ERA champion.

Gable, a biology major, started every game at second base in 2008 and led the Red and Blue in most offensive categories. He set six career highs offensively and put together a 19-game hitting streak in the middle of the season that ranks as the highest by a Penn player since 1996. He also was one of five players named to the All-Big 5 Academic Team. At the conclusion of the season, he was named CoSida/ESPN: The Magazine Academic All-District first team.

Armeny earned his first selection to the All-Big 5 team in his senior campaign. He earned the starting nod in all 39 games the Quakers had in 2008 and started 152 out of a possible 153 games over his four years at Penn. 2008 marked his second-straight season with an average over .300 and his six home runs led the team.

Other award winners for 2008 include Villanova shortstop Derek Shunk (Player of the Year), Temple designated hitter Byron McKoy (Rookie of the Year), ‘Nova manager Joe Godri (Coach of the Year) and Villanova which picked up Team of the Year. For Shunk, this was his second-straight selection as Player of the Year.
