Baseball Hosts Saint Joseph's For Two

PHILADELPHIA – Penn welcomes Big 5 rival Saint Joseph’s to Meiklejohn Stadium on Tuesday for a doubleheader. The two teams were originally scheduled to play one game on Tuesday and one on Wednesday, but Mother Nature got involved and postponed game one.

Penn enters the twin bill at 7-9 with one game against Yale currently suspended due to darkness. Saint Joseph’s is 9-16. The first game today is part of the 2008 Liberty Bell Classic. Both teams lost their first game and are playing a consolation game. Game two is a regularly scheduled non-conference game.

The Quakers have the Ivy League’s top hitter in Steve Gable. The sophomore second baseman is batting .460 and is on a 12-game hitting streak. His 19 RBI are tops on the team. Senior centerfielder Michael Gatti has started the last seven games and has seen his average climb from .100 to .324 in that span. His defense has been solid since taking over the starting spot – he has caught all 16 balls hit his way.

Saint Joseph’s possesses the Atlantic 10’s Co-Pitcher of the Week in lefthander Randy Mower. The sophomore is 3-2 in 2008 with a 4.20 ERA. In his last outing he held Temple scoreless in a complete game shutout – the first by a Hawk since 2005. Jeremy Jakubowski is batting .329 and leads the Hawks with 28 hits and 19 RBIs.
