Baseball Plays On the Road at Saint Joseph's Tues.

PHILADELPHIA – In a first round matchup in the 2015 Liberty Bell Classic, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team will travel to face Saint Joseph’s University on Tuesday afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m.

The Quakers (3-8) are coming off a doubleheader sweep of Lafayette on Sunday, posting consecutive wins for the first time this season. SJU (7-10) is coming into the game off a doubleheader split with George Washington on Sunday.

SCOUTING SAINT JOSEPH’S: The Hawks enter their matchup with Penn having won seven times thus far in 2015. SJU has wins over Loyola Marymount, Florida International, Wagner, Northeastern, Bucknell, Monmouth, and George Washington. The Hawks began the year 1-0, and then dropped eight straight games, before picking up their additional victories.

LAST SEASON VS. THE HAWKS: Penn and SJU met one time in 2014, in the second round of the Liberty Bell Classic, where the Hawks edged Penn 4-2 in a 13 inning game at Meiklejohn Stadium. In the game, the Quakers’ Austin Bossart and Ryan Mincher drove in runs for Penn.

THE 2014 LIBERTY BELL CLASSIC: Saint Joseph’s won the 2014 Liberty Bell Classic, defeating La Salle 10-3 in the title game at Citizens Bank Park. It was the Hawks’ second title, winning the other in 2012. The Hawks made the championship game by defeating Villanova in round one, and Penn in round two. The Quakers defeated Lafayette, 11-5, in round one. Penn made the final game of the Liberty Bell Classic in 2012 against SJU, but has never won the title.

AGAINST LAFAYETTE ON SUNDAY: Penn swept the doubleheader with the Leopards, 2-1 and 12-3, on Sunday at Meiklejohn Stadium. Game one ended in walk-off fashion for the Quakers, after senior infielder Mitch Montaldo doubled deep over the centerfielder’s head driving in senior catcher Austin Bossart for the win. Montaldo would have both of Penn’s RBIs in the game. In game two, junior infielder Ryan Mincher went 3-for-4 in the game, with two doubles, while scoring four runs, and adding a RBI. Senior infielder Jeff McGarry collected a pair of hits, including a home run, while driving in three runs. Junior outfielders Matt Greskoffand Gary Tesch, and senior first baseman Matt McKinnon each collected two hits. McKinnon also drove in two Quaker runs. On the mound for Penn on Sunday, senior right-handed pitcher Connor Cuff (1-1) picked up the game one victory throwing a complete game, 7.0 innings, scattering five hits and allowing only one unearned run. In game two, sophomore left-handed pitcher Mike Reitcheck (2-1) earned his second win of the spring, working 7.0 innings for Penn. Reitcheck struck out two batters.

IVY LEAGUE NOTES: Connor Cuff leads the league with a 1.00 ERA, in three starts and 18.0 innings of work … Mike Reitcheck is tied for second amongst pitchers in wins, with two … Austin Bossart is third in the Ivies with a .400 batting average (16-for-40), and in the top-five in the league with five stolen bases … Matt Greskoff ranks in the top-five in RBI, with 11 … Greskoff is also tied for second in home runs, with two. Four other players in the league also have two home runs, including teammate Jeff McGarry.
