Baseball Sends Pair to Mid-Atlantic Classic

PHILADELPHIA - As Major League Baseball shuts down for the All-Star break, a pair of Penn players are preparing to compete in the 2010 Mid-Atlantic Classic this week.

Senior catcher Will Davis and senior outfielder Jeremy Maas have been named to the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League's team in the annual game between the Ripken League All-Stars and the Valley League's All-Stars. The game will be held Wednesday, July 14 at Povich Field in Bethesda, Md.

For Davis, this will mark his second-straight All-Star selection while playing in the Ripken League. The backstop has played in 28 games for the Alexandria Aces this summer and is hitting .327 in the wood-bat league - the fifth-best average in the CRCBL. His 18 RBI are fourth in the league and his 33 hits rank sixth.

Maas, playing for the Herndon Braves, is tied for second in the league with 36 hits in 29 games. Nine of those hits have been doubles, tied for second in the CRCBL.

The Mid-Atlantic Classic begins at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. A Home Run Derby will be held starting at 5:30 p.m. with entrants from both the Ripken and Valley Leagues. Earlier in the day, each All-Star will have a chance to showcase their abilities in a scouting showcase.

Junior Vince Voiro pitches in the Valley League for the Woodstock River Bandits and is 4-2 this summer with a 3.37 ERA. He has fanned 35 batters and opponents are hitting just .216 against him. While he was not chosen for the Mid-Atlantic Classic, Voiro was selected to the Valley League All-Star Game this past weekend. He tossed one scoreless inning for the North Team, helping his side to a 9-2 win.
