Today is a beautiful day in the 70s with barely a cloud in the sky. Freshman Kirk Hayes will get the ball for Penn today, making his first career start. Hayes is from Dallas, Texas and was a three sport athlete in high school. The Red and Blue will be the home team today so we'll get to see how Hayes attacks the batters off the bat.

Also of note, shortstop Derek Vigoa will be playing today with a splint on his left index finger. He hurt himself diving (safely) into first to beat out a throw. Vigoa told me that his glove fits over the splint so he's going to give it a go. Penn is going all-white today, both jerseys and shirts. A few guys (Branigan, Williams) are sporting black socks as well.

Maine (4-6):
Fransoso - 2B
Mercurio - C
Martin - RF
Lugbauer - DH
Leisenheimer, Ian - LF

Penn (1-1):
Grandieri - RF

12:50 Some notes on Bazdanes, he is 0-1 on the year with two starts and a 9.00 ERA in 7 innings of work. Lewis leads Maine with a .425 average after going 5-5 with five runs and five RBI last night. Vigoa leads the Quakers with a .44 average and Davis is right behind him at .429.

Top First: Sorry for the delay in getting the blog up, wireless internet was being fickle. Against his first batter, Hayes issues a five pitch walk. Mariano behind the plate today and Davis will DH. Fransoso steals second and advances to third on a bloop single to center by Mercurio. Little conference on the mound as Hayes seeks his first out. Maine 1-0 Sharp third on the play as Mercurio scores. Fly to Mraz in left ends the inning.

Bottom First: Bazdanes has some good speed, but uses an offspeed offering to strike out Grandieri swinging on a full count. Soft liner by Williams to second caught for the second out. Gordon strikes out swinging to end the first for Penn.

Top Second: Hayes gets the batter down 1-2, but hits him in the wrist. Maine 2-0 High chopper over Branigan's head goes for a triple, the third in the last two games for Lewis, scoring the runner from first. Hayes walks no. 7 batter Stilphen. Maine 3-0 Single over second base scores a run, however a Stiphen went too far rounding the bag and was tagged out by Vigoa. Hayes fires a high fastball past the swinging Patane for his first career strikeout and second out of the inning. Hayes walks Fransoso to put runners on first and second. Williams gloves a grounder and touches third to end the inning.

Bottom Second: Banzdanes working very quickly, but Branigan nails a pitch into right for a single. Banzdanes slowing down now that he is in the stretch for the first time today. Back-handed stab by Stilphen at third allows Maine to turn two, as Will Davis comes up with two on and no out. Davis lines out to right.

Top Third: "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash played between innings and i definitely saw a few people singing along. Hayes has to try and avoid that fire as he walks the leadoff batter in four pitches. Branigan reaches up for a liner but it goes off the palm of his glove as both runner advance. Maine 5-0 A single to left loads the bases with no outs. Maine 4-0 Pitch gets away from Mariano and the runners all advance. Infield single to short by Lewis scores one from third and puts runners on the corners. Maine 6-0 Another pitch goes to the backstop as the runner from third scores. Gordon grab a pop up behind second for the first out. Wild pitch by Hayes advances the runner to third. Maine 7-0 Base hit through the left side on a 1-2 pitch scores one. Hayes continues to struggle with his control, hitting a batter to put runners on first and second. Maine 8-0 Double under the outstretched arm of Branigan to score one. Maine 9-0 Williams makes a nice grab and throw to Branigan for the second out. Gordon to Brangian for the third out.

Bottom Third: Vigoa up to bat for the first time. His splint is no issue, as the sophomore bangs single past the glove of the third baseman. Lorenzo hits into a double play on the first pitch he sees, two down. Mraz hits a ball through the legs of Bazdanes for a single up the middle. Chopper to second by Grandieri to end the inning.

Top Fourth: Branigan takes the grounder to first himself as Penn takes care of the leadoff man for the first time today. Williams connects with Branigan off a grounder for out number two. Lewis singles up the middle againt Hayes. Williams takes care of a high fly ball to end the inning. Coach Cole talking to his team outside the dugout. The team has just three hits through the first three, but has Williams (no. 2 hitter) coming up.

Bottom Fourth: Short chopper by Williams to third gets him the infield single. Gordon walks to advance the runner. Williams forces the throw at second, trying to disrupt the pitcher. Long fly ball by Branigan caught on the left field line, one down. Maine 9-1 Penn is on the board. A double to center by Mariano scores Williams, but Gordon is thrown out at home, as the Maine coach complains that Gordon didn't make an attempt to slide on the play. However, with the catcher blocking the plate it does make it difficult to slide. Davis leaves one stranded as he strikes out for the third out.

Top Fifth: Hayes runs the 1-2 pitch inside, hitting Leisenheimer. A fly out to Grandieri makes it one down. Double play ball to Gordon, but the Quakers only get one as Vigoa's throw to first goes high. Kyle Olson warming up in the bullpenn now with a lefty on deck. Maine 10-1 RBI base hit to right, as a runner scores. Hayes out as Olson comes in to face the lefty Martin. On the second pitch he sees Martin nails a pitch to the wall, but Grandieri makes the catch going back into the wall for the third out. Olson doing his job on that play.

Bottom Fifth: Vigoa grounds out to second to open play. Lorenzo strikes out swinging for the second out. Mraz watches the third strike as Kyle Olson comes back out to start the sixth.

Top Sixth: Olson catches a toss from Branigan as he touches the bag for the first out. Deja vu as Branigan has to go to his right this time to make the play, same result however. Olson hits Lewis with two down. Lewis gets fooled on the pickoff move by Olson, but slides into second before the tag gets down. Maine 11-1 A double by Stilphen scores Lewis. Olson out and replaced by freshman John Beasley. On the 3-2 pitch, Beasley hits the batter to put runners on first and second. Maine 14-1 Patane makes Penn pay with a three-run homer to left-center. A walk by Beasley. Maine 16-1 Two run shot to push the lead to 15 before a flyout to Vigoa ends the inning.

Bottom Sixth: Grandieri hits a leadoff single up the middle. Swing and a miss by Williams for the first out. Gordon also goes down by strikeout, swinging on a 2-2 pitch. Bazdanes strikes out the side, getting Branigan looking on a full count.

Top Seventh: Reid Terry comes in to start the inning and strikes out the first batter he faces. Second batter hits a bounding ball to Vigoa, and his throw just barely takes Branigan off the bag to allow the runner to stay safe. Terry walks Lewis, one out now with two on. Sacrifice fly scores the runner from third, after a wild pitch advanced the runners. Reid catches a hard grounder right at his midsection. he makes the throw to first for the out.

Bottom Seventh: As we are in seventh strectch I'd like to give a shout out to assistant coach Jon Cross who is celebrating his birthday today. Also of note, Emelio Pastor entered the game for James Mraz last inning, going to center and moving Lorenzo to right. Mariano walks to open the inning against Benoit, who has just come into the game. Davis down to first, with eight straight balls. Jeremy Maas comes in to pinch run for Mariano at second. Vigoa advances the runner as he grounds out to the second baseman. A walk by Lorenzo puts Pastor up with the bases loaded. Maine 17-2 Ball thrown behind Pastor and Maas comes in from third to score as all the runners advance. Pastor hits a ball to the picther to takes care of if for the second out. Maine 17-3 Another wild pitch allows Davis to score. Benoit with control issues again, walking Grandieri. Maine 17-5 Williams punches a single through the right side, scoring both runners. Maine 17-6 Williams to second on a wild pitch and comes around to score on a double to the wall in center by Gordon. Maine 17-7 single by Branigan scores Gordon from second as the Quaker bats have come alive with six runs in the inning. Benoit leaves with a less than stellar performance as Ben Orvis comes in with Maas coming to the plate. Ball four to Maas, as Davis comes up for the second time this inning. Davis flies out in foul territory behind first to end the six-run inning for Penn.

Top Eighth: Trey Jennings now in to pitch for Penn as Grant Saunders moves behind home plate for his varsity action. An incoming Grandieri calls off Gordon for the fly, one out. Jennings strikes out Fransoso swinging for the second out of the inning. Jenning finishes with another strikeout for the Quakers first 1-2-3 inning of the game.

Bottom Eighth: Vigoa grounds out to start the inning, but Lorenzo reaches on a fielding error by the second baseman. Pastor earns his first varsity hit with sigle to right. Patane ends any momentum Penn had as he fields the ball, steps on second and throws to first for the double play.

Top Ninth: Coach Cole is getting creative here to end the game, putting Matt Tellem in left to open the inning, and taking to the mound Adrian Lorenzo...we'll see what the lefty can do. Lorenzo induces a flyout to Tellem in left. Gordon dives to stop the ball from going up the middle but can't get the throw off on the infield single. Single to center, runners on first and second. Tellem takes a fly and then Pastor shows off his speed, covering a ton of ground on a fly out to deep center to end the inning. Solid job for the lefty on the mound.

Bottom Ninth: Steve Gable in to pinch hit to lead tihings off. Gable grounds to the shortstop. Gordon issued a walk and Branigan hits a one hopper to the right fielder to put two on with one out. Saunders walks to load up the bases for Matt Tellem. Maine 17-8 Tellem earns an RBI with the walk. Vigoa hits into a 4-6-3 double to end the inning.

The Quakers showed much better fight in the final three innnings, outscoring Maine 7-1. Check PennAthletic.com later in the afternoon for the full recap. Have a great afternoon.
