Begley's 22 Leads Quakers to 74-60 Victory Over Quinnipiac

The University of Pennsylvania men’s basketball team began its season with a 74-60 victory over Quinnipiac in the opening round of the Preseason NIT. The Quakers (1-0) were led by senior Tim Begley,who had22 points, to help Penn earn its first Preseason NIT win.

In addition to Begley’s 22 points, sophomore Mark Zoller recorded his third career double-double with 15 rebounds and 10 points. This was also a career-high in rebounds for Zoller. Other Quakers (1-0) with impressive starts included sophomore Ryan Pettinella, who pulled down nine boards, a new career-high and sophomore Steve Danley, who scored a new career-best with 11 points.

The Bobcats (0-1) held an early 5-4 lead before a Steve Danley lay-up with 15:35 to go in the first half gave the Red and Blue a 7-6 advantage and the Quakers never looked back. Quinnipiac was plagued by poor shooting throughout the contest, enduring a 10:25 scoring drought during the first half and shooting 35 percent for the game. Penn held a 43-22 lead heading into the locker room.

The Quakers opened the second stanza with a 15-6 run which culminated with a Ryan Pettinella lay-up at the 15:27 mark to give the Red and Blue their largest lead of the game at 58-28 (30).

Penn shot 44 percent from the field, including 72.4 from the charity stripe. Prior to tonight's contest, the Quakers were 0-2 in Preseason NIT play.

With the win, the Quakers advance to play Providence, an 83-78 winner over Niagara. The game will be Thursday, Nov. 18 at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. at 7:30 p.m.
