Berkowsky Captures National U-19 Fencing Championship

Sacramento, Calif. – Penn fencing sophomore Ron Berkowsky won the United States National Under-19 Men’s Foil Championship at the Summer Nationals in Sacramento, Calif. With the title, Berkowsky moved into fifth place in the national rankings and established himself as a contender for the United States Team at the World Junior Championships in 2006.

Trailing 14-11 in the finalbout, Ron rallied to take the last four points and won 15 -14 over Andras Horanyi for the Gold. Horanyi is ranked first in the US in Junior Men's Foil. The victory capped a remarkable freshman season forBerkowsky, who had won the gold medal in the Individual Men's Foilof the Intercollegiate Fencing Association Championshipand followed that with the gold in the Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Tournament. At the NCAA Championship in Houston, Berkowsky won the round robin of 24, finally placing third in the medal round.He was awardedfirst-team All-America honors by the US Fencing Coaches Association.

In 2004-05, the Penn men’s fencing team finished 13-4 overall and placed second at the Intercollegiate Fencing Association tournament.
