Houston, Texas -- University of Pennsylvania freshman Ron Berkowsky won the bronze medal in the men's foil at the NCAA Fencing Championships, held at Rice University and Harris County-Houston Sports Authority on Friday.
Berkowsky, in his first NCAA appearence, collected 18 wins in the team competition rounds to advance to the final four. He fell to defending National ChampionBoaz Ellis of Ohio State in the first bout but came back to defeat Nonpatat Panchan of Penn State to take the bronze.With the win,Berkowsky also earned first-team All-American honors.
In addition to Berkowsky, teammate Michael Galligan placed ninth in the event, earning14 wins in the foil. Together, the two had 32 wins, placing the Penn team in tenth place overall after the team competition. Berkowsky and Galligan are the only two members of the men's fencing team who qualified for the NCAA's. Earlier in the season, both were named second-team All-Ivy for their performance during the regular season.
The women's fencing competition will begin on Saturday, March 19 at Rice University and Harris County-Houston Sports Authority
