PHILADELPHIA - The Ivy Leagueand Philadelphia Big 5 haveannouncedtheir first weekly honors for the 2008-09 basketball season, and Penn sophomore Tyler Bernardini has been named the Player of the Week by both.
Bernardini's honor comes after his 26-point performance at No. 1 North Carolina Saturday afternoon, which matched a career high. Bernardini went 9-of-18 from the field, hit four three-pointers, and also added two rebounds, two assists and two steals in 31 minutes of action. Penn lost to the Tar Heels, 86-71. Bernardini, of course, was last year's Ivy League Rookie of the Year and a five-time Ivy League Rookie of the Week.
Classmate Jack Eggleston, meanwhile, earned a spot on the Ivy League Honor Roll for his efforts at UNC. Eggleston had his first collegiate double-double, scoring 11 points and snaring 12 rebounds. He also recorded three assists, three steals, and two blocked shots in a team-high 34 minutes of action.
Penn is back in action Tuesday morning, facing off against Drexel as part of ESPN's Hoop Marathon. The Quakers and Dragons will tip off at 10 a.m. at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, just three blocks north of The Palestra.
